Planning a summer wedding? Summer is the most popular time in England to get married, and although the weather is pretty unpredictable and we frequently remind you to plan for bad weather, you do still need to prepare for sunshine too!

Sun is great and it means you can have the outdoor wedding you have dreamed of, but you also want to be comfortable, so we have 7 things for you to consider during your planning.

Looking for summer decor inspiration? Look no further: Summer Wedding Inspiration You Must See!

Chocolate at your wedding!

If you are thinking of having chocolate favours, gifts for your bridal party or a sweet confectionary table, you need to take the heat into consideration if you are having a venue which doesn’t have an air conditioning system or is a structure which is likely to get warm, ie. A marquee, an orangery, tipi.

We would advise to avoid using anything which can melt and needs to be set out early in the day, such as favours, or having these set up last minute. For something such as a chocolate buffet or sweet table, we would advise to have this set up early evening if possible to avoid your sweets being ruined by the heat. This is something to think about during your summer wedding planning.

Storing your wedding cake

Make sure you are aware during your summer wedding planning, what time your wedding cake will be delivered and whether the cake maker needs to set the cake up, or if this can be stored in a cool area. Can it be set up just before your guests arrive by your wedding planner? Can the cake maker arrive later in the day to set up?

You may also want to rethink having another chocolate or sugar fondant flowers or décor on your cake. We have seen many issues with cakes which are displayed beautifully in windows etc, but are then taken down by the sun beaming onto them!

Summer wedding floral arrangements and bouquets

For your flowers for the bridal party, make sure you have somewhere cool for the bouquets to be stored, and for décor, speak with your florist to ensure they set up later in the day to avoid wilting, or avoid floral arrangements altogether.

Speak to your florist to request a potential second visit if a refresh of flowers is required mid-afternoon to remove any wilted flowers and top up water to keep the flowers fresh.

Suits/dresses appropriate for a summer wedding

Think about the material and colours you are using for your outfits; so nobody is uncomfortable! Speak with your dress maker about how you can make your dress suited to the weather, for instance, should you keep your shoulders covered if they are prone to burning? Will suncream stain the particular fabric? Silk bridesmaid’s dresses became very popular in 2019, but people soon realised that these were not heat resistant and were very warm for the bridal party!

For men, it is a difficult one, as of course they will want to wear a suit, but think about options for them once the ceremony and photos are over, could they potentially remove their jacket and have shirt and waistcoat for dinner? Also decide if you are happy for wedding guests who are male to wear smart shorts/short sleeve shirts.

Air conditioning at your wedding venue

If your venue doesn’t have an air conditioning system, look into hiring units and have these on from early in the morning to keep the space cool. Also look at hiring fans around the space to keep the air flowing. If you are hiring a marquee or other structure, these can easily be hired via the company you have hired your structure from.

Also check if the sides from the marquee are removable and at what point the company will need to know this information by, for example, with a tipi, if you are having it completely closed, they need to know this before installation. For other kinds of venues, such as hotels, stately homes, check if they have a system in place, how hot it usually gets, and hire air conditioning units for your summer wedding locally during your planning if you feel they will be needed.

Time of summer wedding ceremony

Think about the time of your ceremony, many couples opt for 12pm, 1pm which can be the hottest point of the day, so you may want to consider a late morning or afternoon ceremony. Check where the sun will be in relation to where you are getting married, so the sun isn’t beaming down on you or in your eyes. Point your ceremony away from the sun, whether your ceremony is indoors or outdoors.

You also don’t want the sun affecting your photos! Try and view your venue within the same month you are getting married and at the time of your ceremony if possible before booking, or just ask.

Nature and your summer wedding!

Many couples are quick to order fairy lights for the outside areas, but take into consideration that these can attract bugs and mossies and these are not the guests you want partying with you! This doesn’t mean you can’t have the lights to create a low lit ambience, but think about also using citronella candles and supplying guests with insect repellant.

If you suffer from hayfever, make sure you keep in a routine of taking an antihistamine daily on the lead up to your day and on the day, nobody wants puffy eyes and a watery nose! Think about also using essential oils and local honey – whatever works best for you!

Drinks and refreshments for a hot day

Make sure you have plenty of cold, bottled water for guests. Many couples now create ‘hydration stations’ for guests, with glass kilner jars filled with different flavoured waters, to encourage guests to keep hydrated with water and not just alcohol! Also check your your planning with the caterer that they are happy to continuously top up water and if there is drinking water at the venue or if you will need to supply bottled water.

It’s October, the perfect month for an Autumn wedding. There’s beautiful red, orange and yellow crispy leaves covering the floor, a chill in the air, dark mornings and evenings and even (annoyingly!) ice on the car first thing in the morning…!

Autumn is such a beautiful time of year to get married; summer is generally the busiest season for a wedding, but there are so many benefits of having an October/November wedding.

Beautiful additions such as pumpkins, beautiful gold tones, rich dishes during your wedding breakfast and mulled wine, as well as stunning bold colours, such as burnt oranges, golds, deep reds and purples which are some of the colour palettes we are going to look at.

Weather is also a huge factor in weddings, with couples expecting sunshine on their summer wedding, disappointed when the UK weather shows its true form and rains, but with autumn, I tend to find couples just don’t expect good weather, and have an indoor plan in place, so it’s just a bonus if the sun does shine!

I’m so excited to show you these 7 stunning autumnal colour palettes! Let me know what you think!

Burnt Orange Autumn Wedding Colour Palette

Image 1: https://www.instagram.com/dressforthewed/

Image 2: https://www.instagram.com/mkinvitations/

Image 3: https://www.instagram.com/carlowrie_castle/

Image 4: https://www.instagram.com/jennyyoonyc/

Image 5 & 6: https://www.instagram.com/ctaylorsfloristry/

From beautiful burnt orange bridesmaids dresses, to brown tones throughout your floral displays, I don’t think you can get more autumnal than this colour scheme! Works well with creams, ivories, pale pinks and white, so really easy to match with the rest of your décor. Such a vibrant, beautiful colour, but definitely seasonal and suits October/November autumn weddings best. I also love the use of the mixed colour bridesmaids dresses, as well as different materials, shown by Jenny Yoo, to create a real mix of autumn vibes! Don’t feel you need to go too over the top with the orange if you feel it is too much, keep it to just your bridesmaids, with a orange flowers in the mix, then keep everything else to the lighter brown tones, or just go all out burnt orange!

Deep Red Autumn Wedding Colour Palette

Image 1: https://www.instagram.com/bypapermint/

Image 2: https://www.instagram.com/bloominous/

Image 3: https://www.instagram.com/tularosaflowers/

Image 4: https://www.instagram.com/mixologist_world/

Image 5: https://www.instagram.com/decorelle.eu/

Image 6: https://www.instagram.com/jennyyoonyc/

A real classic and pretty popular year year, especially in the cooler months. Red is widely available, whether it’s bridesmaids dresses, flowers or décor, you won’t struggle to find the colour to match. Don’t be too strict on matching the exact red, a mixture of different shades works really well, and did you know, red and pink is back in! Yes, you heard me right. A deep red with a vintage rose works beautifully together and gives a real feel of the excitement for the festivities to come at the end of the year – get your guests ready for it! You can even match your drinks in with this colour scheme, as shown by Mixologist World.

Plum Autumn Wedding Colour Palette

Image 1: https://www.instagram.com/thegoldletter/

Image 2: https://www.instagram.com/spindlesdesignco/

Image 3: https://www.instagram.com/_ellebore/

Image 4: https://www.instagram.com/trillefloral/

Image 5: https://www.instagram.com/weddingandeventsfd/

Image 6: https://www.instagram.com/victoriaspaperie/

I absolutely love the use of plum tones in a colour palette, just make sure to go for the right tone and avoid the use of the once popular Cadbury purple! This is very dated now, but a deep plum will just look absolutely stunning, working well with dusky pinks, lavenders and exceptionally well with deep forest greens, which is perfect when it comes to the flowers and you can go all out with the foliage! Deep plum roses matched with eucalyptus are a match made in heaven! This colour palette has real romantic vibes to it, so if you want to keep with an autumn wedding theme but with the added romance, this is the palette for you.

Emerald Green Wedding Colour Palette

Image 1: https://www.instagram.com/jennyyoonyc/

Image 2: https://www.instagram.com/insideweddings/

Image 3: https://www.instagram.com/emmylondonofficial/

Image 4: https://www.instagram.com/emmylondonofficial/

Image 5: https://www.instagram.com/brickandiveyevents/

Image 6: https://www.instagram.com/shoprevelry/

Such a rich, classy colour palette, and one of my favourites. Emerald green has really risen in popularity over the last couple of years, especially in home décor too, and we are starting to see it even more now in the wedding industry. This colour will look remarkable on your bridesmaids, especially if matched with a velvet material, as shown by Jenny Yoo. You could even opt for velvet deep emerald table clothes, using white and gold cutlery and crockery to lighten the tables slightly. This colour palette just screams expensive and gives a real wow factor to your autumn wedding.

Navy Wedding Colour Scheme

Image 1: https://www.instagram.com/juliakcalligraphy/

Image 2: https://www.instagram.com/aimeefordltd/

Image 3: https://www.instagram.com/thegoldletter/

Image 4: https://www.instagram.com/thth_bridesmaids/

Image 5: https://www.instagram.com/maevenbox/

Image 6: https://www.instagram.com/butter_and_sugar_cakes/

Navy blue is such a classic and has been popular for many years now, and you just can’t go wrong with it! Pair it with white or ivory tones, or you could even bring a blush pink into the mix if you want to lighten up the colour palette slightly, although I think the deeper the tones, the more autumnal your day will feel. Gold works really well with navy, so opt for gold cutlery, candles holders and even gold rimmed glasses and charger plates.

Gold Wedding Colour Palette

Image 1: https://www.instagram.com/millie_stone_uk/

Image 2: https://www.instagram.com/erzuliecakes/

Image 3: https://www.instagram.com/insideweddings/

Image 4: https://www.instagram.com/revelryeventdesign/

Image 5: https://www.instagram.com/studio.minc.official/

Image 6: https://www.instagram.com/wedshed/

That’s right, you can go all gold! Why not! Your bridemaids will look stunning in all gold dresses, whether you opt for a deep gold or more of a champagne gold look. Fill your tables with gold candle holders and taper candles to really bring warmth to your wedding venue. You could opt for all white with gold cutlery, chargers and accessories, or you could match it with creams and brown tones as shown by Wed Shed. Such a simple colour palette, which creates an autumnal and classy vibe to your day.

Charcoal Autumn Colour Palette

Another strong favourite of mine, especially for autumn/winter months. Grey can have a reputation for feeling cold, but if you use a grey with blue tones, this will really bring warmth to your day. You don’t have to go all out, with a charcoal coloured cake as I’ve shown, but just add in touches here and there. But if you do go all out, the vibe of your day will feel warm and stylish. Grey also matches most colours out there so it’s a great palette to have! Why not add hints of a paler grey, silver (cutlery) and white. You could even use a pale or brighter blue or a beautiful lavender to complete the palette.
